Ecommerce Website Development Cost in India (2026)

What ecommerce website development costs in India in 2026, from platform and design to payments, hosting and maintenance, with typical price ranges.

Planning an online store and trying to pin down the ecommerce website development cost in India? The honest answer is a range, not a single number. A store with 20 products and one payment method is a modest project; 2,000 products with variants, cash-on-delivery rules and courier integration is a much bigger one. This guide breaks the cost into the parts you actually pay for, with typical 2026 figures, so you can read any quote and know what is inside it.

Ecommerce Website Development Cost: The Short Answer

For a small or mid-sized Indian store, expect roughly ₹50,000 to ₹3,00,000 or more to build, plus yearly running costs for hosting, domain, plugins and maintenance. Where you land depends on the number of products, the platform, how custom the design is and what the store has to connect to.

For comparison, at ABR Academy an online store starts at around ₹60,000. That is a starting point, not a package price: the final figure depends on products, features and content, and we confirm it in a written, fixed-scope quote before any work starts.

What Drives the Cost

  • Products and variants. Every product needs photos, a description, prices, stock and, often, sizes or colours. Uploading 50 products is an afternoon; 2,000 is a project of its own.
  • Platform. WooCommerce, Shopify or a custom build each move the cost in different directions (see below).
  • Design. A well-chosen theme adapted to your brand costs far less than an original design, but a custom design can lift conversions for a brand-led store.
  • Payments and checkout. UPI, cards, net banking, wallets and cash on delivery each need setting up and testing, often with rules (COD limits, pin-code checks).
  • Shipping and GST. Shipping rates by weight or zone, courier integration such as Shiprocket, and GST-compliant invoices are real work.
  • Integrations. Inventory sync, accounting, a CRM or WhatsApp order alerts are priced separately because each connects to another system.

Platform Costs: Shopify vs WooCommerce vs Custom

  • Shopify has the lowest setup cost and handles hosting for you, but you pay a monthly plan for as long as the store runs, plus paid apps for many features.
  • WooCommerce is a free plugin on WordPress. You pay for good hosting, a theme and a few premium extensions, and you own the whole store. It suits most small and mid-sized Indian stores and is what we build most often.
  • Custom development makes sense when the store is part of a bigger system: dealer or wholesale pricing, distributor portals or complex stock across locations. It costs more to build but has no platform subscription.

Cart, Checkout and Order Notifications

The checkout is where a store earns or loses its sales, so it deserves its own place in the budget. A smooth cart and checkout means guest checkout without forced sign-up, the payment methods your customers use (UPI first for most Indian shoppers, then cards, net banking and cash on delivery), clear delivery charges before payment, and pin-code checks if you only deliver to some areas.

After the order, customers expect updates: an order confirmation by email, and often by SMS or WhatsApp, followed by dispatch and delivery messages with a tracking link. Abandoned-cart reminders bring back some of the shoppers who leave before paying. Each of these is a small piece of work on its own, and SMS and WhatsApp messages carry a per-message cost from the provider, so ask which notifications a quote includes.

Running Costs After Launch

  • Domain: roughly ₹700 to ₹1,500 a year for a .com or .in.
  • Hosting: stores need more than basic shared hosting; plan for about ₹8,000 to ₹30,000 or more a year for managed or cloud hosting.
  • Premium plugins and themes: ₹0 to ₹15,000 a year, depending on what the store uses.
  • Maintenance: updates, backups and security checks typically cost ₹1,000 to ₹10,000 a month. Our care plans start at around ₹1,500 a month.
  • Payment gateway fees: around 2% per transaction on standard plans, deducted from each payment (see Razorpay’s pricing for a current example).
  • GST: registered businesses charge 18% GST on web development, so check whether a quote is inclusive or exclusive.

Hidden Costs to Ask About

  • Product data entry and photography. Is uploading your catalogue included, and how many products?
  • Ownership. The domain, hosting and admin logins should be in your name.
  • Hosting lock-in. Some cheap packages only run on the developer’s own hosting at their renewal price.
  • App subscriptions. On Shopify especially, add up the monthly apps before you compare quotes.

How to Choose the Right Package for Your Budget

List the features you need on launch day: the products, the payment methods your customers actually use, delivery areas and invoices. Everything else, such as wishlists, loyalty points or multiple languages, can come in a second phase once the store is earning. Ask for an itemised quote so you can see what each feature costs and decide what waits.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to build an ecommerce website?

Usually four to ten weeks, depending mostly on the number of products, the integrations and how quickly content and feedback come in.

Is WooCommerce or Shopify cheaper in India?

Shopify is cheaper to start but costs money every month. WooCommerce costs a little more to set up properly but has no platform subscription, so over a few years it is often the cheaper option for a small store. Shopify suits owners who want hosting and updates fully managed.

Can I add products myself after launch?

Yes. Both WooCommerce and Shopify let you add and edit products from the dashboard. Ask for a short handover session to be included in the quote.

What is the cost of e-commerce website development in India for a small store?

For a small store with a modest catalogue, one payment gateway and standard shipping, expect the lower part of the ₹50,000 to ₹3,00,000+ range, plus yearly hosting, domain and maintenance. At ABR Academy an online store starts at around ₹60,000.

Do I also need a mobile app for my store?

Usually not at the start. A fast, mobile-friendly website serves most shoppers well. An app makes sense once you have repeat customers who order often; then a cross-platform app can share the same products and orders as your website.
